When a massive solar flare fries the electrical grid, Captain Jordan Hughes' problems are just starting. Stranded far from home with a now-priceless cargo of fuel and a restless crew, Hughes weighs his options as violence worsens ashore and the world crumbles around the secure little world of his ship, the Pecos Trader.

"Wait and see", is not an option. Hughes has to get his ship and crew home, but FEMA arrives with other plans.

Resisting the demands of an increasingly corrupt and self-serving federal bureaucracy, Hughes leads a ragtag band of sailors, preppers, and dissident military personnel on an incredible voyage to reunite them all with home and family - only to find their real journey is just beginning.

Under a TellTale Sky Disruption Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) RE McDermott Kevin Pierce R E McDermott Books

I don't want to call this a "bad" audiobook. It was just a little dry for my taste. I just couldn't get into it and stopped listening. Michael Crichton can tell a similar tale with the same attention to detail but with more flare. However, a Tom Clancy fan might enjoy McDermott's style. William R. Forstchen's 'One Second After' is a similar story dealing with an EMP and how society copes and it has a much brisker pace. It's a great premise for an very plausible "apocalypse" so I've been looking for anything I can in this genre. Unfortunately, for me, 'Under a Tell-Tale Sky' fell short.

I'm giving it 3 out of 5. I didn't enjoy it but not because it was a poorly written book, but because it just wasn't to my taste. As I said, I found it a bit dry.

In all fairness I may revisit this audiobook at a later date and push through to see if the story picks up its pace, and I'll revisit my review.

Under a TellTale Sky Disruption Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) RE McDermott Kevin Pierce R E McDermott Books Reviews

This deserves 5 stars, all day long, however, for critics like myself using these reviews to ascertain the quality of a book I tend to ignore 5 star reviews because they're far too common to be legitimate. I first look at the critical reviews to see if there is consensus on the proclaimed flaws and if so is it a flaw that I can forgive or not forgive. Naturally the less critical reviews the better but my point is simply because a book has a high percentage of five stars does not in itself equate to a quality story.
After scouring through many post apocalyptic novels and considering their various reviews I eventually came to this particular one. I was satisfied with the critiques and convinced that it was worth tasting the free sample. The sample is the definitive test and this novel passed. Now here is what it is and what it isn't.
The MC and supporting cast are very relatable and likable. I'm personally not a fan of attempting to create realism by adding disgusting flaws to the hero such as he's an adulterator or drug user ect. I prefer my good guys to be people like myself or my friends or the bad guys to be people who you hate and want to die in the story. This story is very clear in who is good and who is bad. I also greatly appreciate the bravado of the author in dispensing with political correctness which makes this tale so much more believable. Humans should be depicted just as they are in all their animalistic treachery, not hiding things like race, language or actions to go along with their inner character.
The pace is certainly not as blazing fast as some stories. Some readers will no doubt be bored with this authors pace as it does give the reader a chance to put down the book for a break, I however prefer this pace. First, pace isn't everything. I've read from authors who are masters at page turners but ultimately negated the thrill with other flaws more egregious. Secondly, I have a life outside of reading books, so I can't devote 24 hours to read an entire novel in one sitting. Having a break in the flow is more conducive to my lifestyle.
The realism is perhaps the greatest accomplishment of this author. From the nature of it's characters, to the cause of the apocalypse, and especially how the elements of organized institutions would play out such as democracy, military, and civilian sectors. In fact that is by far the scariest part of this work because it translates perfectly what men do. Men are selfish and will contrieve any means necessary to hold on or enlarge their scope of power, especially men like politicians.
In summary, as worthy a read as any you will find and I do not easily endorse most of the material I read.
If the state of current affairs in this country (actually on this planet of ours) isn't enough to convince you of the situation we would all be in after some post-apocalyptic event which disrupts food, electricity and water; then RE McDermott's Disruption Series will definitely open your eyes. I feel as if Mr. McDermott is somehow blessed with the gift of prophesy and is here to warn us of the most likely future for this world if (or maybe when) some type of apocalyptic event occurs. Lately, I have been reading a good number of books related to the subject of post-apocalyptic life and this series feels more real than most. The author’s ability to weave a tale that includes multiple separate lives with vastly different circumstances in which many of the characters end up crossing paths and interacting throughout the story allows the reader to be able to switch from story line to story line and back again without causing confusion. I have read other books with multiple story lines that I had a hard time following, but with this series, I have no trouble following the story from character to character. After reading this book, I was disappointed only in the fact that I would have to wait for the next book in the series. This is one series I have a hard time putting down. If you like post-apocalyptic stories, you’ll love this series.
This story is a nice change into the post apoc world which I also love. There are multiple story lines but you can already see how they may all converge at some point. The characters are well described, the various settings feel very real and the scenes are exciting and just complex enough to keep us on our toes. We learn to hate the 2 gangs in Texas and North Carolina, that the government has a diabolical plan to control the US, the Appalachian Trail is portrayed beautifully and an integral part of the story, and of course the Coast Guard (it is a McDermott book so there are lots of boats) is one of the Good Guys. Great adventure, super suspenseful (I kept wanting to skip to the next part to see what happened) and highly recommended. Looking forward to the next book.
I'm a fan of the Post Apocalyptic genre. I really enjoyed this book! It stayed clear of many of the cliches that are often found. The way the civilians, coasties, army, etc all work together was a neat spin. It was a nice swerve from the typical everything stops working novels where folks actually had a chance to start putting some basic things back together. Looking foward to next installment
