The Conundrum of the Loveless Marriage
This sixth book in the Hugh Kerr Mystery series, takes a dark turn to touch on some very sensitive topics, especially for the newlyweds.
Hugh and Ellen are trying to start fresh following their recent marriage and several highly emotional personal and professional events. The first day back in the office they are confronted with an unscheduled client asking very real questions about her rights as a married woman with respect to boundaries of the marriage bed. The law with respect to marital relations falls strongly in the man's favor, and Hugh could not offer much positive advice. Unfortunately, events rapidly progressed from extremely unpleasant discussions to shortly later discovering the husband of their prospective client murdered.
The ensuing murder case against Hugh's client brings many twists and turns. The discussion of appropriate behavior between married couples, and unconventional sexual explorations cause unexpected and sensational personal and court room drama.

I was very interested to read this novel because it's the first one after the resolution of the early murder mysteries of books 2-5. I wondered if I would still find the characters interesting. I did, more so than even I expected. In fact, this murder mystery touched upon what was an extremely delicate subject in the 1950's - husband and wife relations. I was very surprised to see how this subject was handled and honestly, I found it a page turner. I sure didn't see the ending and the development of the main characters was stunning. So, the authors passed my test to see if they could keep my interest with flying colors and if anything I liked this more - just because it dealt with a taboo subject that still, today, has no easy answers.
